Car history: |
The car was extensively restored in the mid-1980s over 5 years by its then owner, a gentleman from New York, including sand blasting the frame and returning it to its original condition. The correct paint upholstery and carpets were used throughout.
The vehicle subsequently went into storage in Miami from 1988 until 1990 when it was acquired by a Swiss collector with a substantial Corvette collection. This collector was one of Switzerland's largest GM dealers and his collection of Corvettes, acquired over a 25 year period, was intended to celebrate the model.
The collection was auctioned on 10 March 2003 by Bonhams in Geneva, where this car went under the hammer along with 20 others, including some of the rarest of the breed.
Chassis 4639 was acquired at the auction by an English collector and Porsche dealer who kept it for 12 years before it was sold to the present owner. During his ownership this actual car was featured in Stephen Bayley's superb book 'Cars - Freedom, Style, Sex, Power, Motion, Colour, Everything', a homage to the most stylish cars ever built. Stephen Bayley is a well known commentator on style in the UK. |
